Algeria has launched the Elcazar Tlemcen hotel brand at an existing luxury property in Tlemcen, in a move Tourism and Handicrafts Minister Houria Meddahi described as the introduction of the country’s first national hotel brand.

Meddahi presided over a ceremony on Thursday evening, September 24, at the hotel on the Lalla Setti plateau. The property previously operated under the Renaissance name, according to Algérie Eco. Its luxury classification and service standards are to be maintained under the supervision of the Algerian Hotel Investment Company.

The Elcazar Tlemcen hotel brand gives the property an Algerian identity tied to the city’s heritage. Meddahi said its name draws on Tlemcen’s Andalusian cultural traditions and means “the palace,” in remarks relayed by the Algerian Press Service (APS).

A New Name for an Existing Hotel

At the launch, Meddahi called the change “an important step in establishing an authentic Algerian hotel brand.” The announcement concerns the branding of the existing Lalla Setti hotel; the report did not describe a newly constructed property or provide a timetable for additional Elcazar hotels.

The minister said she wanted Algerian hotel services to reach higher standards of quality and sustainability. She presented the choice of Tlemcen as a way to draw attention to the province’s historic and tourism assets, and argued that domestic institutions can manage and operate hotel infrastructure professionally.

Meddahi also said a successful hotel brand depends on training and qualifying Algerian staff. She linked investment in hospitality skills to improving service and meeting international expectations.

Tourism Ambitions in Tlemcen

The minister expressed hope that the brand would make Tlemcen more visible to visitors, attract investment and support tourism-related employment. Those are stated aims: the report included no investment figure, employment forecast, room count or independent measure of the rebrand’s economic impact.

During her visit to the province, Meddahi also inspected Les Zianides hotel, tourism facilities at the Mechouar citadel in central Tlemcen and the Hammam Boughrara thermal resort.
