Air Algérie has announced the launch of seven new international routes starting June 2026, targeting Africa, Asia, and Eastern Europe as part of its fleet renewal strategy, according to statements made during a press conference in Algiers. The announcement was made by CEO Hamza Benhamouda on the sidelines of a memorandum signing for a new air cargo hub at Houari-Boumédiène Airport. The airline confirmed that its African expansion will prioritize high-growth markets, with additional routes planned to Luanda, Maputo, Accra, and Lagos. These destinations are seen as strategic due to their economic weight and growing demand for both passenger travel and cargo services, local media reported.
This move reflects a broader ambition to position Algiers as a central transit hub linking Europe, North Africa, and sub-Saharan Africa. Countries such as Nigeria and Ghana are considered key markets due to their strong economic activity and increasing regional connectivity needs. The airline has historically had limited presence in sub-Saharan Africa, making this expansion a significant shift in strategy.
Beyond Africa, Air Algérie is also targeting Asia with the planned launch of a direct route to Shanghai in winter 2026. This addition would complement existing flights to Beijing and strengthen air connectivity between Algeria and China, its leading economic partner. The route is expected to support both business travel and trade flows between the two countries.
In Europe, the airline plans to open a new route to Warsaw, reflecting growing demand from the Algerian diaspora in Central and Eastern Europe. This market remains relatively underserved, offering potential for expansion in both leisure and business travel segments.
However, Benhamouda emphasized that the rollout of these routes depends heavily on the timely delivery of new aircraft. The fleet renewal program is central to the airline’s expansion plans, as it seeks to increase capacity and improve operational efficiency.
Parallel to the airline’s growth, Houari-Boumédiène Airport is undergoing significant upgrades to handle rising traffic. Airport officials reported that more than 10 million passengers passed through the hub in 2025, with projections exceeding 11 million in 2026. Planned improvements include the introduction of biometric check-in systems, digital passenger processing, and dedicated low-cost flight operations at Terminal 1.
Additional measures include the deployment of electric ground transport vehicles and enhanced safety systems, alongside new transit lounges aimed at improving passenger comfort.
