Air Algérie has delayed the launch of its direct Algiers–New Delhi service until October 2026, as the Algerian flag carrier reassesses operational and strategic considerations surrounding its planned expansion into the Indian market. The airline said the revised timeline follows a review of fleet readiness, crew scheduling, infrastructure requirements and market conditions.
The planned connection is part of Air Algérie’s broader effort to expand its international network and strengthen links between Algeria and major destinations outside its traditional European and African markets. New Delhi would provide the carrier with a direct connection to India, opening another long-haul corridor for Algerian passengers and travelers connecting between North Africa and South Asia.
According to the airline’s senior management, several operational factors have influenced the timing of the launch. Aircraft availability remains an important consideration, with refurbishment schedules for the carrier’s Boeing 777 fleet requiring adjustments. Crew planning and the availability of supporting infrastructure at both ends of the proposed route are also being assessed before operations begin.
Market conditions have added another layer to the review. Air Algérie is examining demand patterns in South Asia and the capacity required to establish a sustainable service. The competitive environment is also evolving, with airlines serving comparable markets adjusting fares and ancillary services. These developments have prompted the Algerian carrier to reassess how it will position its offering when the New Delhi service eventually enters operation.
For passengers, the delay means that travelers hoping to fly directly between Algiers and New Delhi will need to continue considering connecting itineraries until the new service becomes available. Air Algérie has indicated that the timetable adjustment is part of its wider planning process rather than a change to its broader international expansion strategy.
The New Delhi project comes as Air Algérie continues to diversify its network across Africa, Asia and Europe. The carrier has been pursuing additional international routes as it seeks to expand its geographic reach and respond to changing travel demand, particularly among passengers traveling between Algeria and destinations farther afield.
The airline’s expansion strategy also includes other Asian markets. Previous plans have included new services connecting Algeria with destinations such as Shanghai, reflecting the carrier’s interest in strengthening its presence in Asia alongside its established European and African operations.
The revised timeline will give Air Algérie additional time to align aircraft availability, crew requirements and market planning before committing to the new long-haul corridor. The airline is also monitoring broader aviation conditions, including fuel prices, geopolitical developments and changes in passenger preferences, all of which can influence the economics of long-distance international routes.
The eventual launch of the Algiers–New Delhi connection would represent another step in Air Algérie’s effort to broaden its international footprint and establish stronger direct links between Algeria and South Asia.
