Algeria rowing medals at the African Championships in Tunisia totalled 13, with three gold, seven silver and three bronze securing third place behind Tunisia and Egypt, Ennahar Online reported.
Nihad Benchadli led the gold-medal results with victories in the women’s single sculls and double sculls. She partnered Lilia Mekdad in the double sculls, while Algeria’s third gold came in the under-23 men’s double sculls through Seif Eddine Guenouch and Dhaifallah Aissani.
The championships were held on a lake course in Tunis, according to the report published on 30 September. Algeria had also been third after the opening day, when its rowers collected seven medals: one gold, five silver and one bronze.
Three golds lead Algeria rowing medals
Benchadli’s two titles came in the women’s single sculls, designated W1x, and women’s double sculls, W2x. Mekdad shared the second victory and also appears among the silver medallists in the report’s under-23 results.
Guenouch and Aissani won the under-23 men’s double sculls, designated BM2x. Guenouch added a bronze in the under-23 men’s single sculls, BM1x.
The named under-23 silver medallists were Marwa Oulah in the women’s single sculls, Bachir Haddou in the lightweight men’s single sculls and Mekdad in the lightweight women’s single sculls.
Junior rowers add to the tally
In the under-19 events, Ghizlane Ghoul and Ghizlane Bennacer took silver in the women’s double sculls, while Manal Haddadou won bronze in the women’s single sculls.
Ennahar’s report gives Algeria’s overall haul as 13 medals, although its individual results list is not exhaustive. The named results account for all three golds, four of the seven silvers and two of the three bronzes; the remaining medallists are not identified in the supplied account.
The final tally increased Algeria’s haul from seven medals after the opening day to 13 by the end of the championships, with gold medals in both women’s events and the under-23 men’s programme.
