Security authorities in Tlemcen have dismantled a Tlemcen drug trafficking network using drones to smuggle cannabis from Morocco, arresting four suspects and seizing drugs, cash, and equipment during a coordinated operation.
The operation was conducted by the Search and Intervention Unit following confirmed intelligence about suspicious activities linked to one of the suspects. Investigators discovered that the individual was using drones to transport illicit drugs across the western border into Algeria.
Acting under the supervision of the competent prosecutor’s office, police carried out a targeted intervention that led to the arrest of the main suspect. A significant quantity of processed cannabis was found in his possession at the time of the arrest.
During a search of his family residence in a border municipality, officers uncovered a drone believed to have been used in the smuggling operations. The use of such technology highlights an evolving tactic employed by trafficking networks to evade traditional border controls.
Further investigations enabled authorities to identify and apprehend three additional suspects, including a woman, who are believed to have played supporting roles within the same criminal network.
In total, law enforcement seized 16 kilograms and 650 grams of processed cannabis. Authorities also confiscated two wireless communication devices believed to have been used to coordinate operations between network members.
Financial proceeds suspected to be linked to the criminal activity were also recovered, including more than 50 million centimes in local currency and 300 euros in foreign currency. Investigators believe these funds represent earnings from drug trafficking operations.
Additionally, three passenger vehicles used by members of the network to facilitate transportation and logistics were seized as part of the crackdown.
The dismantling of this Tlemcen drug trafficking network underscores the increasing use of advanced methods such as drones in cross-border smuggling activities. It also reflects intensified efforts by Algerian security forces to combat organized crime along sensitive border regions.
Following the completion of investigative procedures, all suspects were presented before the competent regional judicial authorities. The case is expected to proceed through the judicial system as authorities continue efforts to dismantle similar networks operating in the region.
