Algeria is preparing to expand online biometric passport renewal for citizens living abroad, allowing eligible applicants to complete the renewal process remotely without visiting a consular office. The service was first tested at the Consulate General of Algeria in Paris on June 24, 2026, and will soon be introduced at additional consulates.
The next phase follows a September 8 videoconference chaired by Sofiane Chaib, Secretary of State for the National Community Abroad, with heads of Algeria’s consular posts. The meeting focused on accelerating administrative digitization and improving services for Algerians living outside the country.
Online biometric passport renewal to expand
During the meeting, Chaib reaffirmed the government’s objective of simplifying consular procedures and reducing processing times. The remote passport renewal service is expected to enter a new phase within the coming weeks, with several consulates joining the program before it is gradually extended across Algeria’s diplomatic network.
The initiative is designed to reduce the need for Algerians abroad to travel to a consulate, particularly those living far from diplomatic missions. It also aims to reduce congestion at consular offices by moving parts of the application process online.
The digital system uses a secure platform through which applicants can create an account, submit the required supporting documents and follow the progress of their application remotely. Algerian authorities have said that the platform incorporates security measures designed to protect applicants’ personal data and documents.
Paris launched the passport renewal pilot
The Consulate General of Algeria in Paris officially launched the pilot service on June 24, 2026. The launch was attended by Saïd Sayoud, Minister of the Interior, Local Authorities and Transportation, and Sofiane Chaib.
A live demonstration during the launch resulted in the first biometric passport renewal being completed through the new remote procedure.
The Paris trial was initially restricted to Algerian citizens registered within the consular district who were renewing an existing biometric passport. First-time passport applications were not covered by the pilot.
Who can renew an Algerian passport remotely?
The precise eligibility rules for the expanded rollout have not yet been fully announced. Based on the Paris pilot, the service is intended for eligible Algerian citizens abroad who already hold a biometric passport and need to renew it.
Under Algerian rules, passport renewal can generally be requested during the six months preceding the document’s expiration. Renewal is also possible in circumstances such as a passport becoming unusable because its visa pages are full, or following loss, theft or damage, subject to the applicable procedures.
The September 8 announcement therefore represents an expansion of an existing pilot rather than an immediate launch across every Algerian consulate.
The rollout is expected to proceed in three stages: the initial Paris pilot, expansion to a selected group of consulates within the coming weeks, and a gradual extension to the wider Algerian diplomatic network. Authorities have not yet announced a definitive date for nationwide implementation across all consulates abroad.
For Algerians living overseas, the key development is that online biometric passport renewal is moving beyond the pilot stage, although applicants will still need to wait for their particular consulate to join the program before using the remote procedure.
