Mauritania's recent decision to implement an e-visa system for foreign visitors has sparked confusion on social media, particularly regarding Algerians. However, the Mauritanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has clarified that Algeria is not affected by this new policy.
On social media platforms, including Facebook, reports circulated that Algeria had been included in the list of countries subjected to the new electronic visa. However, the Mauritanian Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that Algeria is not affected, as it is not listed among the countries with which Mauritania has signed a reciprocal visa cancellation agreement. Mauritania's journalist, Mohamed Lamine Khattari, confirmed this in media statements, emphasizing that the decision primarily impacts countries whose citizens previously required a classic visa.
Khattari further explained that the goal of the new measure is to digitize the visa process as part of Mauritania's push toward a smart government and e-culture. This digital shift is intended to streamline and facilitate the visa issuance process.
The e-visa policy does not impact Algeria, as both countries have maintained strong diplomatic ties. This move reflects Mauritania’s broader strategy to modernize its administrative systems, benefiting all visitors in the long term.
