Wassila Kamel Daoud Defends Family Honor, Denies Brother’s Controversial Claims

Wassila Kamel Daoud, the younger sister of controversial author Kamel Daoud

In an unexpected public statement, Wassila Kamel Daoud, the younger sister of controversial author Kamel Daoud, stepped forward to defend her family’s honor. Speaking on the “Kima Kan El Hal” program aired on One TV, Wassila addressed the claims made by her brother in his novel “Houris” and public statements, denying several of his assertions, particularly those regarding their family’s background.

Denying the “Family of Harkis” Allegation

Wassila strongly refuted her brother’s claims that their family is now being labeled as a “family of harkis” or “Jews,” and experiencing psychological warfare because of his actions. She clarified that these accusations were misleading and harmful, asserting that her family had always been deeply committed to Algeria’s patriotism and national identity.

Is Kamel Daoud’s Family Algerian?

Wassila also addressed frequent questions that had arisen due to the controversy, such as: “Are you Algerian?”, “Are you Arab?”, and “Are you Muslim?”. She reaffirmed that their family has always been proudly Algerian and closely tied to the country’s patriotism, values instilled by their father. She rejected the “untruths” her brother had spread about their origins.

Refuting the Writer’s Depictions of Childhood and Family Life

Wassila went on to challenge Kamel Daoud’s depiction of a difficult childhood and the suggestion of a precarious upbringing dominated by men. She emphasized that their family was well-off, with all siblings attending university and obtaining degrees, contrary to the hardships portrayed by Kamel Daoud.

A Turning Point After Their Father’s Death

Wassila attributed a significant shift in Kamel Daoud’s life and career to the death of their father in 2014. She revealed that despite high hopes for him as the eldest child, Kamel began distancing himself from the family during this critical period, signaling a growing detachment from his roots.

Indignation at Criticism of Algeria and Family

Expressing her deep indignation, Wassila criticized her brother for tarnishing the image of Algeria and their family. She stated that he should have honored his country and family for their sacrifices, and she did not expect him to veer so far from their shared values.

In her heartfelt message to Kamel, Wassila urged him to reconsider his views, stating that he was undermining Algerian society with his inappropriate criticism. She reinforced the idea that Algeria is a nation of freedoms and support for women.

A Call to Remember His Origins

Wassila emphasized that, no matter the accolades or support Kamel Daoud received, he should always remember his origins. Her message was clear: love for homeland and family is innate, and it is something that should never be forgotten.

The Reasons Behind Kamel Daoud’s Actions

Regarding the motivations behind her brother’s controversial behavior, Wassila suggested that his actions might be driven by a desire for notoriety or the influence of his entourage, which she implied might include French circles. However, she dismissed the idea that his behavior was motivated by a desire for French nationality or financial gain, stating that their family had never faced precariousness.
