The Algiers Metro will expand with two new extensions, set to open in the second half of 2026, announced Lakhdar Rekhroukh, Algeria's Minister of Public Works and Basic Infrastructures.
The Aïn Naâdja-Baraki and El-Harrach-USTHB sections of the metro are expected to be operational in just over a year and a half. During a press conference on February 8, Rekhroukh confirmed that civil engineering for these two major segments, including tunnel and station construction, is already completed. Work on the installation of necessary systems to operate metro trains is progressing steadily. The El Harrach-USTHB section, part of a 9.5 km line, will link the bustling district of El Harrach with the Algiers International Airport, significantly improving access and reducing traffic congestion. The current 19 km metro network is set to grow to 33 km by 2026, with future plans to expand it to 90 km.
These new extensions are expected to enhance urban mobility and ease congestion, particularly for travelers heading to the international airport. The completion of these projects will also mark a significant milestone in Algiers' public transportation network.
