Algiers, Algeria – South African President Matamela Cyril Ramaphosa arrived in Algeria today for a high-profile working visit aimed at deepening the historic ties between the two nations. Accompanied by a high-level delegation, including South Africa’s Minister for International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, President Ramaphosa’s visit is packed with key diplomatic and economic engagements.
One of the highlights of the visit is the President’s address to the Algerian Parliament, a historic first for a South African head of state. Last week, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune issued a presidential decree summoning both chambers of Parliament for the special occasion. This marks an unprecedented opportunity for President Ramaphosa to address the Algerian people through their legislative representatives.
In his speech, Ramaphosa is expected to underscore the enduring and unshaken relations between South Africa and Algeria, which span several decades.
Strengthening Cooperation and Shared Visions
President Ramaphosa’s visit follows his participation in the 11th session of the High-Level Seminar on Peace and Security in Africa, hosted in the city of Oran. During his stay, he will also hold bilateral talks with President Tebboune.
The two leaders are set to co-chair the Algeria-South Africa High Joint Commission and the Algeria-South Africa Business Forum, taking place at the Sheraton Hotel in Algiers. The Business Forum provides a platform for economic operators from both nations to explore business opportunities, develop strategic partnerships, and boost trade relations.
The High Joint Commission is seen as a mechanism for evaluating and rethinking bilateral cooperation. It will also address pressing regional and international issues on which both nations align.
A Relationship Built on Mutual Respect
The visit by President Ramaphosa reflects the strong and historical ties between Algeria and South Africa, rooted in mutual respect and shared struggles for liberation and justice. As the two nations work to strengthen economic cooperation and address global challenges, this visit reinforces the importance of their strategic partnership in shaping the future of Africa and beyond.
