In a major move to strengthen Algeria’s role in energy development, Sonelgaz is set to establish a power plant in Niger, following high-level meetings with officials from Niger and Burkina Faso.
On January 23, 2025, Mourad Adjal, CEO of Sonelgaz, led a series of talks with delegations from Burkina Faso’s Sonabel and Niger’s NIGELEC in Algiers. This collaboration is aimed at fostering energy development and regional cooperation across Africa. Sonelgaz is committed to sharing its expertise in electricity production, transmission, distribution, engineering, maintenance, and training with Burkina Faso and Niger. Adjal affirmed Sonelgaz’s dedication to supporting energy development in these countries.
In addition, a specialized team from Sonelgaz is set to visit Niger to prepare a memorandum of understanding with NIGELEC for a proposed power plant. This initiative follows earlier diplomatic efforts, including visits by Niger’s Prime Minister and Algeria’s Energy Minister in 2024. Both countries are eager to explore joint efforts in sustainable energy development and capacity building.
This agreement marks a significant step in Algeria’s regional energy leadership and highlights Sonelgaz’s strategic role in advancing energy projects across Africa. The collaboration promises to strengthen ties between Algeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso while contributing to regional economic growth through sustainable energy solutions.
