German Companies Eye Algerian Market, Focusing on Energy and Automotive Sectors

Major German corporations, including Bosch, Volkswagen, Siemens, and VNG, are showing renewed interest in Algeria's energy and automotive sectors. This collaboration focuses particularly on Algeria's green energy transition and potential manufacturing opportunities in the country.

German companies are once again eyeing Algeria for investment opportunities, with a special focus on the country’s energy sector, including renewable energy projects. Algeria, eager to advance its energy transition, is particularly keen on leveraging German technology and expertise. In a meeting with Bosch’s Africa Director, Markus Thill, Noureddine Yassa, the Algerian Secretary of State for Energy, emphasized the importance of incorporating German technology to boost Algeria’s energy transition and sustainable development goals.

Both countries are working together on the SoutH2 Corridor, a major green hydrogen project aimed at transporting 4 million tonnes of green hydrogen from Algeria to Germany. The partnership aims to not only develop green hydrogen but also reduce carbon emissions and integrate efficient solar, photovoltaic, and wind power technologies. Discussions have also focused on collaboration in fuel cell technology, hydrogen production, and training Algerian engineers in renewable energy technologies.

Simultaneously, Volkswagen, which previously had a manufacturing plant in Algeria, is contemplating a return. The German automaker plans to engage with Algerian officials in February to discuss relaunching its vehicle assembly project, following the closure of the Relizane plant in 2020.

The renewed interest from German companies signals a promising future for Algeria’s energy and automotive sectors, particularly in green energy and sustainable development projects.
