In Tizi-Ouzou, the film "Fouroulou," directed by Ali Berkennou and based on Mouloud Feraoun's novel "The Son of the Poor," will premiere next Saturday at the 18th edition of the National Cultural Festival of Amazigh Film (FCNAFA), as announced by the Local Directorate of Culture and Arts.
This movie follows the story of Fouroulou Menrad, the protagonist of Mouloud Feraoun's debut novel "The Son of the Poor" (1913-1962), which was published in 1950. The novel, drawing from the author's childhood experiences in Tizi Hibel village, portrays the life of Fouroulou, a shepherd boy born into poverty in a small Kabylia village who later becomes a teacher.
Director Ali Berkennou depicts on screen the journey and determination of a young boy from a humble background striving to alter his fate through education. This challenging path not only showcases Fouroulou's life but also sheds light on the hardships faced by the populace during French colonial rule.
The screening of the film is scheduled for next Saturday at 5:30 p.m. at the Djurdjura cinema hall, as per the cultural direction.
Born on March 8, 1913, in Tizi Hibel (Ath Mahmoud commune), Mouloud Feraoun began his education at seven, pursued studies at Tizi-Ouzou college and Bouzareah normal school. He commenced his teaching career, serving as a teacher in his hometown in 1935, eventually rising to school director and inspector.
Tragically, he was assassinated on March 15, 1962, alongside five comrades - Ali Hamoutene, Salah Ould Aoudia, Etienne Basset, Robert Aymar, and Max Marchands - by the Secret Armed Organization (O.A.S), a French extremist group opposing Algerian independence.
The FCNAFA, themed "The Film at the Heart of the Revolution," will take place from October 26 to 30, featuring films competing for the L'Olivier d'Or Prize, as well as conferences, debates, master classes, and cinema profession workshops.
The detailed program for this cultural event, resuming after a hiatus of over four years, will be unveiled tomorrow, Wednesday, in a press conference led jointly by Festival Commissioner Amar Tribeche and Director of Culture and Arts Nabila Goumeziane.
