European Parliament Demands Release of Boualem Sansal, But Commission Stays Silent

The European Parliament has called for the immediate release of Boualem Sansal, a French-Algerian writer, who was arrested on November 16, 2024. This resolution highlights the divide between the Parliament and the European Commission, which has stayed silent on the issue, focusing instead on energy concerns with Algeria.

On Thursday, January 23, 2025, the European Parliament adopted a resolution calling for Boualem Sansal's release. All political groups, including EPP, S&D, Renew, Greens/EFA, ECR, and others, united in their condemnation of his detention. The resolution passed with 533 votes in favor, 24 against, and 48 abstentions. However, the European Commission has remained silent despite questions raised by Le Point about its relationship with Algeria, particularly concerning energy and gas supply issues.

The International Boualem Sansal Support Committee expressed gratitude for the resolution, highlighting the European Parliament's unanimous stance against the writer's arbitrary detention.

The European Parliament has voiced its strong opposition to the treatment of Boualem Sansal, while the European Commission's silence underscores the complexities of EU-Algeria relations, particularly in the context of energy priorities.
