ALGIERS - According to a press release from the Directorate General of Customs on Sunday, Customs services reported 73 cases related to combating smuggling and illegal cross-border trade from September 20 to 26 this year.
"In the fight against smuggling and illegal cross-border trade, Customs operational units, deployed across the customs territory, achieved a significant seizure record in collaboration with various security partners between September 20 and 26," the press release states.
During this operation, authorities seized 197,649 psychotropic tablets, 52.74 kg of ecstasy, 218,200 packs of cigarettes, 81,600 liters of fuel, more than 160 vehicle engines and spare parts, 309 units of hunting ammunition, and 240 cell phones.
Moreover, 24,500 euros, 5,500 Tunisian dinars, 2,056 units of assorted alcoholic beverages, and over 2,500 units of cosmetics and personal care items were confiscated.
Additionally, 268,280 kg of subsidized and bulk food items, 88,970 liters of cooking oil, and other goods were also seized.
The press release mentions that 98 individuals were involved in these cases, with 54 vehicles used for smuggling. The total fines imposed are approximately 3 billion dinars, as per the release's conclusion.
