Algiers, Algeria – Belgian multinational Etex, a global leader in construction materials and mining resource exploitation, has expressed a strong interest in investing in Algeria’s vast mining sector, particularly in the exploitation and processing of gypsum (plaster). The move comes as Algeria boasts considerable reserves of raw materials, according to a press release issued Thursday by the Ministry of Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies.
The announcement followed a meeting between Ms. Karima Tafer, Secretary of State for Mines, and Etex CEO Bernard Delvaux. The meeting, held at the Ministry’s headquarters, included high-ranking officials from the Sonarem group, the National Agency for Mining Activities (ANAM), and the Geological Service Agency of Algeria (ASGA). Discussions focused on opportunities for cooperation and investment in mining and processing, with gypsum as a key area of interest.
Etex Seeks Strategic Position in Algeria
During the meeting, Mr. Delvaux outlined Etex’s ambitions to establish a strong presence in Algeria. He highlighted the company’s expertise in manufacturing modern building materials, including gypsum boards, which are essential for sustainable construction.
“We aim to invest in Algeria to leverage its rich gypsum reserves, particularly in regions such as Bordj Bou Arreridj, Batna, Sétif, Biskra, Bouira, Bejaia, and Tébessa,” Delvaux stated. He added that Etex is not only interested in resource exploitation but also in building long-term infrastructure for modern material production in the country.
Algeria’s Open Door for Foreign Investment
Ms. Tafer reaffirmed Algeria’s commitment to fostering international partnerships in the mining sector. “The sector is open to cooperation with foreign expertise that contributes to skill development and mutual benefits,” she said. She emphasized that Algeria supports investments that align with the country’s vision for sustainable development and resource optimization.
Etex’s global footprint includes over 13,500 employees across 160 sites in 45 countries, making it a prominent player in light construction and innovative building solutions.
The partnership, if realized, could bring significant technological advancements and economic opportunities to Algeria’s mining and construction industries, marking a new chapter in the country’s resource development strategy.
