Algérie Ferries has announced changes to its Algiers-Marseille crossings due to procedural changes at the port of Marseille. Meanwhile, Italy’s GNV and Algeria’s Aures SARL face obstacles as Marseille prioritizes established ferry operators.
In a press release issued on Wednesday, January 29, 2025, Algérie Ferries informed passengers of the postponement of its scheduled Algiers-Marseille crossing. Initially planned for Thursday, January 30 at 4 PM, the trip will now be operated on Friday, January 31 at 12 AM. The disruptions are attributed to procedural changes at the port of Marseille.
In parallel, the port authorities in Marseille have denied Italy's leading ferry operator, GNV, permission to operate routes between Marseille and Algeria, despite earlier approvals. GNV will have to operate from the port of Sète instead due to the limited capacity of the new Cap-Janet terminal.
Similarly, the new private Algerian company Aures SARL, set to begin operations in February 2025, will also be unable to operate from Marseille. Instead, port authorities favor existing operators, including Corsica Linea, Algérie Ferries, and Nourris Elbahr Ferries, to maintain their presence on France-Algeria routes.
With the rejection of new operators like GNV and Aures SARL, Marseille’s port authorities are showing a clear preference for established companies, signaling limited opportunities for emerging players in the France-Algeria ferry market.
