Algerian Writer Boualem Sansal’s Controversial Past Resurfaces in Viral Video

Boualem Sansal in Jerusalem

A video showing Algerian writer Boualem Sansal discussing his participation in the 1997 Davos Forum and a secret meeting with an Israeli official has reignited debates about his controversial past and strained relations with Algerian authorities.

Algerian media outlets and social media users are circulating a video of Boualem Sansal, a suspended Algerian writer, recalling his participation in the World Economic Forum in Davos in 1997. In the video, Sansal describes his efforts in facilitating Algeria's participation amid the nation's turbulent Black Decade.

However, the video has drawn attention for Sansal's admission of a secret meeting with Dan Meridor, then Israel's Finance Minister and a prominent Likud Party member. This revelation has stirred heated discussions online, given Algeria's official stance on Israel and its longstanding support for Palestine.

The Davos Forum, an annual event bringing global leaders together in Switzerland, occurred during a challenging period for Algeria, marked by political unrest and a security crisis.

Despite these challenges, Algeria's contributions at the forum were acknowledged internationally, with World Economic Forum founder Klaus Schwab later commending Algeria's economic diversification efforts in 2018.

Sansal’s controversies, however, extend beyond the 1997 event. Arrested on November 16, he faces charges under Article 87 of the Penal Code for "undermining territorial integrity and national unity." This arrest follows his contentious claims on French television that parts of northwestern Algeria historically belonged to Morocco.

In 2012, Sansal further sparked outrage by visiting Israel and participating in the International Literary Festival in Jerusalem. His interaction with Israeli writer A.B. Yehoshua and remarks defending the visit as cultural rather than political faced condemnation from Arab intellectuals and the Boycott Israel Campaign.

The resurfaced video adds to Sansal’s controversial legacy, highlighting the enduring complexities of Algerian politics, national unity, and regional tensions.

Boualem Sansal’s resurfaced comments and historical actions continue to polarize opinion in Algeria, reflecting broader tensions in the nation’s political and cultural discourse.
