On Wednesday, Prime Minister Nadir Larbaoui chaired a government meeting focused on studying a new draft executive decree aimed at enhancing disaster risk prevention in Algeria. The meeting was dedicated to reviewing the modalities of preparing, updating, and implementing general plans for disaster risk prevention, and identifying the key sectors responsible for their implementation.
Strengthening the Legal Framework for Disaster Risk Management
This meeting was part of the completion of the legal framework under Law No. 24-04, enacted on February 26, 2024, which outlines the rules for preventing, intervening, and reducing disaster risks as part of sustainable development. The draft decree is designed to improve how Algeria prepares for and responds to various disaster risks across the country.
Focus on Water and Sanitation Services
As part of the meeting’s broader agenda, the government also discussed efforts to enhance water and sanitation services in Algeria. The discussion highlighted initiatives to ensure equitable and sustainable water access for all citizens. These efforts are part of the water security program, approved by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, which includes improving water harvesting, production, and distribution, as well as monitoring water quality and combating water waste.
Reviewing Key National Development Projects
In addition to disaster risk management and water services, the government reviewed measures related to key development projects, including:
• The railway development program
• Water transfer projects
• The free trade zone project in Tindouf
These projects are vital for Algeria’s infrastructure and economic development, aiming to improve transportation, resource management, and trade.
