Algerian Government Sets Price of Imported Sheep at 40,000 Dinars for Aïd el-Adha 2025

On Sunday, April 20, Algerian authorities announced the official price of imported sheep for Aïd el-Adha 2025, set at 40,000 dinars, following a presidential directive to ease the financial burden on citizens during Eid.

President Abdelmadjid Tebboune’s decision to import one million sheep was made during the Council of Ministers meeting on March 9, aiming to provide affordable mutton to Algerian families.

As a result, a first batch of 15,000 sheep from Romania arrived at the Port of Algiers on April 20, with a second shipment of 12,000 expected on Monday. Other deliveries are planned for several ports across the country.

According to the official APS agency, the imported sheep are being transported to quarantine zones before distribution to designated sales outlets under strict health and safety supervision.

The fixed price of 40,000 dinars per sheep—announced during Sunday’s Council of Ministers meeting and broadcast by Algerian Television (ENTV)—marks a significant reduction compared to previous years, where sheep prices often surpassed 100,000 dinars ahead of Eid.

Public institutions and private companies have already begun inviting employees to register for the purchase of imported sheep, reflecting strong public interest in the initiative.

This move is expected to stabilize or further lower local sheep prices, providing financial relief to households ahead of the religious holiday and reinforcing the government’s commitment to supporting citizens during key festivities.
