Lillia Benyamina, a 23-year-old Franco-Algerian, has made hiking history by completing the Hexatrek, a grueling journey spanning over 3,000 kilometers across France’s diverse landscapes. Starting in Wissembourg on the German border and ending in Hendaye at the Spanish border, her solo trek highlighted the intersection of sport and environmental commitment.
Lillia embarked on this extraordinary journey to raise awareness and funds for the conservation of the gray wolf, a species integral to France’s ecosystem but under threat. Partnering with the FERUS association, she raised significant funds to support their mission of protecting large predators.
The trek, lasting 122 days since its start in August, took Lillia through a kaleidoscope of natural beauty—mountain ranges, lush forests, and arid plateaus. Walking 25 to 30 kilometers daily, she reached her final destination, Hendaye beach, on December 8, 2024.
Lillia’s connection to nature and wildlife has been a lifelong passion. Formerly serving as a gendarme in a military institution, she shifted gears to focus on nature as a wildlife photographer. Equipped with minimal gear—a tent, sleeping bag, stove, and basic necessities—she demonstrated remarkable resilience, completing the journey without external assistance.
Her mission extended beyond hiking; Lillia engaged communities, sparking discussions and raising awareness about the importance of conserving the gray wolf. The Hexatrek was not only a physical challenge but also a platform for her environmental advocacy.
This inspiring feat showcases the power of individual commitment to environmental causes, leaving a lasting impression on both nature enthusiasts and conservation advocates.
