Algeria maintained its position as Europe's second-largest supplier of pipeline gas in February, following Norway, with exports reaching 92.6 million cubic meters per day.

According to data from the Attaqa Energy Research Unit, Algeria's pipeline gas exports increased by 1.9% month-on-month, compared to 90.9 million cubic meters per day in January. The country remains a critical energy partner for Europe, ensuring a stable supply amid growing demand.

Italy and Spain: Key Destinations for Algerian Gas

Algeria's state-owned energy company, Sonatrach, operates two major pipelines delivering gas to Italy and Spain. Italy retained its position as the leading importer, receiving 62.6 million cubic meters per day, marking a 3.5% increase compared to the previous month.

Meanwhile, exports to Spain remained stable at 30 million cubic meters per day, underscoring the country's role in Europe's energy security strategy.

Europe's Rising Demand Amid Supply Challenges

The surge in European gas demand is driven by declining reserves, following the suspension of Russian natural gas transit through Ukraine. In February, European gas storage levels dropped to 38.5%, with the following country-specific levels:

  • France: 22%

  • Germany: 34%

  • Italy and Poland: 50%

  • Spain: 65%

Norway Leads in Gas Supply to Europe

Europe’s natural gas imports rose to 410 million cubic meters per day in February, with Norway supplying 235.5 million cubic meters per day—a 5.3% increase after disruptions in January. Norway accounts for 57% of Europe’s pipeline gas, with Germany being the largest recipient (137.5 million cubic meters per day).

Russia, Azerbaijan, and Libya's Contribution

With Europe striving to diversify energy sources amid geopolitical uncertainties, Russia remains the third-largest gas supplier, delivering 52.5 million cubic meters per day via the TurkStream pipeline through Turkey—a 10.1% increase from January but 36% lower year-on-year.

Other key suppliers include:

  • Azerbaijan: 28.2 million cubic meters per day (+6.7% from January)

  • Libya: 1.25 million cubic meters per day (-8% from January)

Algeria's Future Supply Prospects

Despite its stable exports, Algeria has limited potential to significantly increase supply, according to industry data. However, with Europe's increasing focus on energy security and diversification, Algeria remains a key player in the region’s gas market.
