Algeria Prepares for 5G Launch as Government Reviews Deployment Plan

Algeria is advancing towards the deployment of 5G technology, as the project was presented to the Government Council on Wednesday, March 19. While no official launch date has been announced, mobile operators are actively preparing for the transition, signaling that the country is edging closer to rolling out fifth-generation mobile networks.

The Prime Minister’s office confirmed in a press release that the Government Council reviewed the 5G deployment project, a crucial step in launching the advanced mobile network across Algeria. However, the statement did not specify a timeline for the official rollout.

Despite the absence of a set date, Algeria’s three main telecom operators—Ooredoo, Djezzy, and Mobilis—are already making significant strides toward 5G readiness.

Ooredoo has partnered with Chinese tech giant Huawei to upgrade its core networks in key markets across the Middle East, North Africa, and the Maldives, aiming to pave the way for 5.5G technology.

Djezzy successfully tested 5G back in 2022 in collaboration with Huawei and Nokia, validating its infrastructure’s ability to support next-generation mobile services.

Mobilis has long been preparing for 5G. According to Mehdi Naddaf, the operator’s head of roadmap and technological development, the company has made substantial investments and transformations to ensure a smooth transition.

“5G is an increase in throughput,” Naddaf explained, adding that while traditional mobile networks primarily connect individuals, 5G will also connect devices and smart objects.

The launch of 5G in Algeria has been in the works for several years, delayed by technical and logistical challenges. Nevertheless, the government and telecom operators continue to work toward creating the optimal conditions for its implementation. As preparations gain momentum, Algeria’s entry into the 5G era appears to be on the horizon.
