Algeria Denounces Disinformation Campaign by French Extreme Right

Embassy of Algeria in France

The Algerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemns a disinformation campaign led by the French extreme right, highlighting the unlawful expulsion of an Algerian national and violations of bilateral agreements.

In a press release issued on January 11, 2025, Algeria's Ministry of Foreign Affairs criticized the "revanchist and hateful" narrative perpetuated by the French extreme right and its representatives within the French government. The Ministry refuted allegations of escalation in Algerian-French relations, attributing tensions to efforts by these groups to impose their views through intimidation and historical score-settling.

The controversy centers on the recent expulsion of an Algerian national who had lived in France for 36 years. Despite being a long-term resident, father to two French-born children, and holding a stable job, he was deported without being allowed to present his case in French or European courts.

Algeria emphasized that the expulsion violated the 1974 Algerian-French Consular Convention, as French authorities failed to notify or grant consular access to the Algerian side. The decision also hindered the individual's right to due process ahead of a scheduled trial on February 24, 2025.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring the individual could defend his rights through a fair judicial process, condemning France's actions as a breach of legal and human rights standards.

Algeria reiterated its stance against escalating tensions and called on France to respect legal agreements and uphold the principles of justice and fairness in bilateral relations.
