Approved language schools in Algeria are now required to strictly adhere to the activities listed in their Trade Register code. This directive comes from the Ministry of Internal Trade and Market Regulation.
On January 5, Mohamed Mezghache, the central director of economic control and fraud repression at the Ministry of Internal Trade, emphasized that language schools registered under code 607-014 must limit their operations solely to language teaching. Mezghache’s statements, broadcast on Algerian Television, highlighted the Ministry’s routine and habitual monitoring of businesses to ensure compliance with their registered activities. While he refrained from detailing any other prohibited activities, it appears that schools may be offering services outside the language teaching domain, such as private tuition in other subjects, which violates the terms of their registration.
Earlier in November, the Ministry of Commerce had issued a memo to regional and wilaya trade directors, urging them to focus on private language schools that were found to be offering services beyond language instruction. This memo underscored the need for closer inspection and increased monitoring.
The Ministry’s move is part of a broader initiative, involving local authorities and various agencies, to tighten oversight on private language schools and ensure they adhere to their legal obligations. These efforts will include nationwide checks and weekly reporting from local trade officials.
The Ministry of Commerce’s new directive emphasizes strict compliance with business regulations and aims to curb any unauthorized activities in Algeria’s private education sector.
