The Algerian Electricity and Gas Company (Sonelgaz) and the Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (ETG) signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on Thursday to strengthen collaboration in electricity and gas production, transmission, and distribution, furthering regional energy security.
The agreement aims to bolster cooperation in maintaining electrical installations and aligns with President Abdelmadjid Tebboune's directives to enhance regional partnerships. This initiative follows the recommendations of the April 2024 trilateral meeting in Tunisia, where Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya focused on enhancing food, water, and energy security.
Sonelgaz seeks to expedite the strategic project for electrical interconnection between the three countries, advancing regional integration in the energy sector. During the meeting in Tunis, attended by Sonelgaz CEO Mourad Ajal, Tunisian Electricity and Gas Company (TEG) representatives, and Libyan General Electricity Company (GECOL) via videoconference, Ajal highlighted the potential for development and shared interests through this collaboration.
On the sidelines, a framework agreement was signed between Sonelgaz's Social and Cultural Services Fund and ETG, aiming to foster cultural and social initiatives for their employees. Additionally, Ajal met with Tunisian Minister of Industry, Mines, and Energy, Fatma Thabet Chaiboub, to discuss energy cooperation and reaffirm Sonelgaz’s commitment to ensuring energy security.
This MoU marks a critical milestone in achieving energy integration across Algeria, Tunisia, and Libya, contributing to sustainable development and regional energy security for the benefit of all three nations.
