
Minister of State for Energy, Mines, and Renewable Energies, Mohamed Argab, discussed enhancing bilateral energy cooperation with Ethiopia's Minister of Water and Energy, Habtamu Etefa Geleta. Talks centered on electricity production, distribution, and renewable energy projects, including solar and wind energy.
During their talks, the two ministers emphasized the importance of Algeria's expertise in energy, particularly through Sonelgaz, to support Ethiopia in developing its electrical network in remote and agricultural regions. Ethiopia expressed keen interest in Algeria’s experience in rural electrification and the development of renewable energy projects, including solar photovoltaic and wind energy. Algeria offered to support Ethiopia's efforts to expand its energy infrastructure, particularly in providing electricity to remote areas.
Ethiopia’s Minister, Habtamu Etefa Geleta, highlighted the country’s progress in energy access, with 54% of the population now having electricity. He underscored the positive impact of solar power plants in public institutions and noted that over 10,000 people in regions like Somalia, Oromia, and Afar now have access to electricity.
Both sides agreed to form a joint working group to explore specific projects, aiming to bolster cooperation in energy and infrastructure, while promoting sustainable development through mutual exchange of expertise.
The partnership between Algeria and Ethiopia marks a significant step in regional energy collaboration, focusing on rural electrification, renewable energy, and the exchange of technical expertise. The formation of a working group will pave the way for future projects in the sector, benefiting both countries.
