15th Oranese Music and Song Festival Opens to Celebrate Algeria’s Rich Cultural Heritage

15th Oranese Music and Song Festival 2024

The 15th edition of the Oranese Music and Song Festival kicked off on Sunday in Oran, with the participation of 29 artists from Oran and neighboring wilayas. The event, organized under the slogan “Our Heritage, Our Identity,” highlights Algeria’s rich cultural traditions and enduring musical legacy.

In a speech read on his behalf by the Director of Culture and Arts for the Wilaya of Oran, Minister of Culture and Arts Zouhir Ballalou emphasized that the festival reflects the State’s commitment to encouraging artistic creativity, supporting young talent, and fostering culture as a bridge for dialogue across generations.

“Oranese music and song is an authentic art form that embodies Algeria’s ancestral spirit, carrying feelings of joy, nostalgia, and hope through its harmonious melodies,” the Minister stated.

He further noted that the festival has become a cherished annual tradition, not just as an artistic event but as a celebration of Algerian cultural diversity, a cornerstone of the nation’s identity.

Preserving Cultural Heritage

Festival curator Souad Bouali stressed the importance of safeguarding Algeria’s tangible and intangible cultural heritage, including Oranese music. Bouali highlighted its evolution over time, where Bedouin song transitioned from traditional instruments like the Gasba and Gallal to modern instruments such as the violin, accordion, and flute.

“This festival is an opportunity to preserve our music’s deep roots and showcase its ability to evolve while maintaining its identity,” Bouali remarked.

Honoring Legends of Oranese Music

The opening evening paid tribute to two iconic figures of Oranese music:

Abdellah Benahmed, a celebrated musician who accompanied Ahmed Wahby and Blaoui El Houari.

Bouzid El Hadj, a prominent specialist in Bedouin song.
