Former Algerian President El-Yamine Zeroual has died at the age of 85 on Saturday at the Mohamed El-Saghir Nekkach Military Hospital in Algiers, following a prolonged battle with a terminal illness, marking the end of a significant chapter in Algeria’s political and military history.
Born in 1941 in Batna, Zeroual joined the National Liberation Army during Algeria’s War of Independence, actively participating in the struggle against French colonial rule between 1957 and 1962. His early involvement in the liberation movement shaped his future role in both military and political spheres.
After Algeria gained independence, Zeroual pursued advanced military training abroad, including in the Soviet Union and later at a French military academy in 1974. His education and experience positioned him as a key figure within the country’s armed forces.
Throughout his military career, Zeroual held several high-ranking positions within the People’s National Army. He served as commander of the military school in Batna and later led the military academy in Cherchell. He went on to command multiple military regions, including the 6th, 3rd, and 5th regions, before being appointed commander of the ground forces within the army’s General Staff.
Zeroual rose to political prominence during a critical period in Algeria’s history. On January 31, 1994, he was appointed Head of State by the High Council of State amid national instability. He was later elected President of Algeria on November 16, 1995, consolidating his leadership during a turbulent era.
In a notable political decision, Zeroual announced in September 1998 that he would shorten his presidential term and organize early elections. His presidency officially concluded on April 27, 1999, paving the way for a transition of power.
The El-Yamine Zeroual death Algeria marks the passing of a leader who played a central role in both the country’s military development and its political transition during the 1990s. His legacy remains tied to a period of significant challenges and transformation for the nation.
