French ambassador Stéphane Romatet Algeria return amid improving diplomatic relations between Paris and Algiers

The possible return of French ambassador Stéphane Romatet to Algiers signals a potential diplomatic breakthrough between France and Algeria after more than a year of strained relations. The Stéphane Romatet Algeria return comes amid renewed contacts between the two governments aimed at easing tensions and restoring normal diplomatic ties.

Relations between Paris and Algiers have been marked by a prolonged period of tension that led to the departure of Stéphane Romatet from his post in April 2025. His exit symbolized the deterioration of bilateral relations, which were strained by political disagreements and public controversies.

However, recent developments suggest that both sides are now seeking to restore a more stable diplomatic relationship. According to reports by Jeune Afrique, Algerian President Abdelmadjid Tebboune has signaled that the French ambassador is once again welcome in Algiers.

The message was reportedly delivered during discussions with Laurent Nuñez, France’s Minister of the Interior, whose recent visit to Algeria appears to have contributed to easing tensions between the two countries. His trip marked one of the first significant diplomatic contacts aimed at reopening dialogue between Paris and Algiers.

If confirmed, the Stéphane Romatet Algeria return would effectively end a diplomatic vacancy that has lasted for more than a year. It would also represent a strong signal that both governments are willing to move past the tensions that disrupted their relationship.

The crisis that led to the ambassador’s departure emerged in April 2025 following the broadcast of an episode of the investigative program Complément d’enquête on France 2. The episode focused on Franco-Algerian relations and sparked strong reactions from Algerian authorities.

According to Algeria’s official television channel AL24 News, the ambassador was subsequently declared “persona non grata” by the Algerian authorities. Officials in Algiers strongly criticized the program, describing it as a “veritable attack” against the Algerian state and its institutions.

In an official statement at the time, Algerian authorities denounced what they called a “web of falsehoods,” accusing the program of spreading misleading narratives about the country.

The controversy was further fueled by comments attributed to the ambassador in the program regarding French President Emmanuel Macron’s diplomatic shift in July 2024. That shift saw France express support for Morocco’s autonomy plan for Western Sahara, a position that remains highly sensitive for Algeria.

These developments intensified existing tensions between the two countries, whose relationship has historically been complex and shaped by political, historical, and regional issues.

Recent diplomatic exchanges now suggest that both governments are seeking to rebuild a functional working relationship. The discussions held during Laurent Nuñez’s visit reportedly addressed several contentious issues, including security cooperation and the future of diplomatic representation.

The potential return of Stéphane Romatet is therefore widely seen as a symbolic step toward normalization. Diplomats often view the presence of an ambassador as a key indicator of the health of bilateral relations.

Should the return be officially confirmed, it would signal a willingness by both Paris and Algiers to turn the page on a period of heightened tensions. It may also open the door to renewed dialogue on broader issues of cooperation, ranging from migration and security to economic ties.

While challenges remain in the Franco-Algerian relationship, the expected Stéphane Romatet Algeria return could mark the beginning of a gradual diplomatic thaw between the two countries.
