Algeria and Germany have agreed to strengthen police cooperation, with illegal migration identified as a key priority during high-level talks held Thursday in Algiers. The meeting between DGSN chief Ali Badaoui and German federal police head Dieter Romann focused on tackling cross-border threats, according to official statements.
The discussions, initially held in a one-on-one format, were later expanded to include senior officials from both sides. Badaoui described the visit as “a unique opportunity to consolidate the foundations of our joint work,” stressing the importance of sustained coordination between the two countries’ law enforcement agencies. Romann echoed this view, noting that the current geopolitical climate requires “closer cooperation than ever.”
Efforts to combat irregular migration and human trafficking were at the center of the talks. Algerian authorities emphasized a comprehensive strategy that combines prevention and operational readiness, with police forces playing a central role. Key areas of cooperation include border management, tracking smuggling networks, detecting forged travel documents, and locating individuals wanted by justice systems.
The meeting also highlighted existing collaboration. According to the DGSN, Algeria and Germany carried out 17 joint activities across 2024 and 2025, including training sessions, exchange visits, and specialized meetings. These initiatives covered topics such as the air transport of high-risk individuals and the handling of police intelligence. Officials described these exchanges as evidence of a shared commitment to strengthening expertise and operational coordination.
German officials welcomed the progress made so far, particularly in criminal cooperation, and expressed interest in expanding collaboration further. Future areas identified include aviation security and coordination around major international sporting events, reflecting broader security concerns beyond migration.
As part of the visit, the German delegation toured the headquarters of Algeria’s Border Police Directorate, where they were briefed on operational procedures for managing cross-border flows of people and vehicles. The visit underscored Germany’s interest in Algeria’s migration control framework and its practical implementation.
The renewed commitment to cooperation signals a shared effort to address evolving transnational threats, with both countries aiming to deepen coordination in response to increasingly complex security challenges.
