Algeria’s state-owned utility Sonelgaz and Senegal’s national electricity company Senelec have signed a memorandum of understanding in Algiers aimed at strengthening Sonelgaz-Senelec energy cooperation and providing a framework for joint activities.
The agreement was signed by Sonelgaz acting CEO Nabil Kafi and Senelec CEO Gaye Toby, under the supervision of Algeria’s Energy and Renewable Energy Minister Mourad Adjal and Senegal’s Energy and Petroleum Minister El Hadji Abdourahmane Diouf.
Adjal said the memorandum represents a step toward stronger bilateral energy ties and reflects the two countries’ intention to build partnerships between their energy companies. The discussions follow talks that began in August.
Algeria Offers Expertise for Senegal’s Gas to Power Strategy
According to the source reports, Algeria has expressed readiness to support Senegal’s Gas to Power strategy, which seeks to use the country’s gas resources for electricity generation.
Adjal said Algeria would make the expertise of its national companies and specialists available across the energy value chain to help Senegal address challenges in its energy sector and strengthen its electricity system.
The Algerian minister linked the cooperation to Senegal Vision 2050 and Senegal’s objectives of improving energy supply, expanding access to electricity and pursuing energy sovereignty. He also described the partnership as part of efforts to strengthen South-South cooperation and African integration.
Senegal’s energy and petroleum minister welcomed the memorandum and praised Algerian expertise in electricity generation, transmission and distribution, as well as the management of energy companies.
He said Senegal is seeking to benefit from Algeria’s experience in the sector and announced that the two governments are expected to conclude an energy cooperation agreement in Dakar in December.
The Senegalese delegation was also scheduled to visit several Algerian energy facilities during its stay to examine the capabilities of Algerian companies.
The memorandum establishes a company-level framework for cooperation between Sonelgaz and Senelec. The sources did not provide details on specific projects, financing commitments or implementation schedules under the agreement.
