Algeria and OPEC discussed global oil market stability and the future of producer cooperation during a meeting between Hydrocarbons Minister Mohamed Arkab and OPEC Secretary-General Haitham Al Ghais on Sunday, Algérie Patriotique reported.

The talks at the hydrocarbons ministry covered developments in the oil market, the challenges facing it and coordination among OPEC and non-OPEC producers under the OPEC+ framework. The report did not announce a production decision or a change in output policy.

Al Ghais was in Algeria on a working visit at Arkab’s invitation. Sonatrach chief executive Nour Eddine Daoudi, ALNAFT president Abdelkader Cherfaoui and Hydrocarbons Regulatory Authority president Amine Remini were among the officials present, according to the report.

OPEC+ cooperation and governance

The two sides discussed prospects for cooperation among countries participating in the Declaration of Cooperation, the arrangement linking OPEC members and other oil producers. They also considered OPEC’s operations, governance and priorities as the global energy market changes.

The meeting came ahead of the tenth anniversary of the Algiers Agreement, concluded on 28 September 2016. Speaking afterward, Arkab described it as an important step in producer cooperation and said it helped lay the foundation for the broader OPEC+ framework.

Arkab said Algeria continued to work for dialogue and coordination within the two groupings. In his account, cohesion among producing countries is essential to supporting a stable and balanced global oil market. He also called for continued cooperation and consensus building.

Al Ghais said the discussions covered OPEC and OPEC+ issues and efforts to preserve stability in oil and energy markets. He praised what he called Algeria’s “central and historic” contribution to the organisation, pointing to the first OPEC summit in Algiers in 1975, a meeting in Oran in 2008 and the 2016 agreement. He thanked President Abdelmadjid Tebboune for Algeria’s support of OPEC and OPEC+ work.
