Algeria–Austria hydrogen cooperation will be supported by a new memorandum of understanding covering renewable energy, renewable hydrogen and related technologies, Ennahar Online reported on Wednesday.
The memorandum sets out a strategic framework for bilateral cooperation, with solar energy and renewable hydrogen among the areas discussed by the two countries’ ministers.
Algerian Energy and Renewable Energy Minister Mourad Adjal met Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer, Austria’s Federal Minister for Economy, Energy and Tourism, on 30 September. According to Ennahar, the talks took place on the sidelines of participation in the second ministerial meeting of the Southern Hydrogen Corridor initiative.
The ministers explored opportunities to develop their countries’ energy partnership through joint projects, investment and exchanges of expertise and technology.
A framework for Algeria–Austria hydrogen cooperation
The memorandum provides a framework for pursuing cooperation rather than announcing a specific hydrogen production or supply project. Ennahar’s report did not provide an investment amount, production capacity or implementation timetable.
The discussions focused on Algeria’s renewable energy potential and the opportunities the two sides see for developing projects together. Solar energy and technologies associated with renewable hydrogen were highlighted as areas for further cooperation.
The ministers also reaffirmed their commitment to continued work on an energy partnership and stronger bilateral economic cooperation, the publication reported.
Their talks placed the Southern Hydrogen Corridor initiative within the wider context of regional and Euro-Mediterranean cooperation in clean energy. Both sides stressed its importance for developing partnerships among the countries involved.
The reported agreement covers renewable hydrogen and associated technologies as well as renewable energy. The source report did not detail the next steps for individual projects, financing arrangements or technology partnerships.
