The Sonatrach TSGP Niger pipeline project has entered a new phase as Algeria’s state-owned energy company dispatched a technical team to Niger on March 17 to prepare for construction, following directives from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to launch the project after Ramadan 2026.
The mission aims to collect key technical data on the route of the Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline (TSGP) across Nigerien territory. This work is being carried out in coordination with local authorities as part of preparations for the upcoming construction phase.
Algerian technicians have also been tasked with reviewing Niger’s legal and regulatory framework governing pipeline installation. This includes examining requirements related to hazard assessments (HAA), environmental impact assessments (EIA), and the necessary construction permits and authorizations.
The deployment follows a February 16 announcement by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune during a joint press conference with Niger’s leader Abdourahamane Tiani. At the time, Tebboune confirmed that construction of the pipeline in Niger would begin shortly after Ramadan 2026.
With only days remaining before the end of the holy month, Sonatrach is moving ahead to implement presidential directives and ensure that initial groundwork is completed on schedule. The company emphasized that this step is essential to launching the project on the Nigerien segment without delays.
During their stay, Sonatrach representatives are expected to meet with officials from the Nigerien Petroleum Company (Sonidep), the Ministry of Petroleum, and other stakeholders involved in the project. These discussions will focus on coordinating operational steps and aligning technical requirements.
According to Sonatrach, both Algerian and Nigerien teams will jointly assess the preliminary stages of route studies, taking into account findings from earlier feasibility work conducted by consultant Penpsen. This phase will pave the way for detailed engineering studies and eventual construction activities.
The Sonatrach TSGP Niger pipeline is a key component of the broader Trans-Saharan Gas Pipeline, a strategic infrastructure project designed to transport natural gas from Nigeria to European markets via Niger and Algeria.
Stretching approximately 4,200 kilometers, the pipeline includes around 1,800 kilometers yet to be completed. Once operational, it is expected to significantly enhance regional energy connectivity and strengthen supply routes to Europe.
Sonatrach highlighted that the initiative reflects Algeria’s commitment to deepening strategic partnerships across Africa and promoting South-South cooperation. The project is also seen as a way to reinforce the group’s presence in the continental energy sector.
As preparations intensify, the coming months will be critical in determining the pace of implementation and the ability of stakeholders to meet the targeted post-Ramadan 2026 construction timeline.
