Algeria has officially opened its satellite internet market to competition with a call for bids issued on April 9, 2026, to grant two NGSO satellite telecom licenses, according to official statements. The move aims to expand high-speed internet access nationwide, particularly in underserved and remote areas.
The call for bids was launched by the Regulatory Authority for Postal and Electronic Telecommunications (ARPCE), targeting operators capable of deploying non-geostationary orbit (NGSO) satellite networks. These systems are designed to deliver ultra-fast internet connectivity across wide geographic areas, including regions where traditional infrastructure remains limited or economically unviable.
According to the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, the initiative is part of a broader strategy to reduce Algeria’s digital divide and strengthen national connectivity. Authorities emphasized that expanding satellite-based services will help ensure more equitable internet access while supporting digital inclusion across rural and isolated communities.
The program also seeks to stimulate competition in the telecommunications sector and diversify available services. Officials noted that the introduction of NGSO technology could accelerate the development of Internet of Things (IoT) applications, particularly in strategic sectors such as agriculture, mining, and transport. This aligns with Algeria’s wider digital transformation agenda and infrastructure modernization efforts.
ARPCE specified that the tender is open to licensed VSAT operators in Algeria as well as global operators with NGSO satellite constellations. Interested bidders can obtain tender documents between April 9 and April 19 upon payment of a 1 million dinar fee.
Minister of Posts and Telecommunications Sidali Zerrouki described the initiative as a key step toward enhancing Algeria’s digital infrastructure. He stated that the objective is to complement existing networks and extend high-speed internet coverage across the entire national territory, reinforcing long-term connectivity goals.
