Algeria has introduced stricter monitoring measures to secure its medicine supply as global tensions threaten pharmaceutical availability, with authorities warning of potential disruptions in the coming weeks, according to official statements.
The move comes amid rising instability in the Middle East and concerns over international freight routes, which could affect the import of medicines and raw materials used in local pharmaceutical production. In an urgent memo, the Ministry of Industry and Pharmaceutical Production called on all operators to anticipate logistical disruptions and strengthen internal tracking systems, as local media reported.
Under the new directive, pharmaceutical companies — including manufacturers, importers, and distributors — are required to closely monitor inventory levels and delivery schedules. The ministry has introduced an early warning system obliging operators to immediately report any supply difficulties via a dedicated communication channel. This requirement applies not only to finished medicines but also to essential inputs needed for domestic production.
The directive is anchored in Article 162 of the 2026 Finance Act, which mandates regular reporting of pharmaceutical stock levels through the ministry’s digital platform. Authorities emphasized that compliance is compulsory, warning that failure to meet reporting obligations or ensure product availability could result in legal penalties.
Officials say the measure is designed to prevent shortages before they occur, ensuring continuity of care across the national healthcare system. By reinforcing coordination between public authorities and private operators, Algeria aims to shield patients from external supply shocks and maintain stable access to essential medicines despite an increasingly uncertain global environment.
