Algeria has officially submitted new elements of its intangible cultural heritage to UNESCO, with a strong focus on the traditional blouse of western regions, during a ceremony led by Malika Bendouda on Tuesday at the CNRPAH in Algeria, aiming to secure international recognition and preserve ancestral knowledge.
The event brought together cultural officials and international guests, including the wife of the Serbian Prime Minister, underscoring the diplomatic dimension of cultural heritage as a tool of soft power and global exchange.
At the heart of the submission is the dossier titled “The Art of the Blouse and Its Embellishment in Greater Western Algeria: Knowledge, Skills, and Rituals.” This traditional garment reflects generations of craftsmanship and embodies the cultural identity of women in western Algeria.
Known for its intricate embroidery, fine fabrics, and symbolic designs, the blouse is more than attire—it represents social traditions, ceremonies, and a living heritage passed down through generations. Authorities hope its inclusion will ensure broader protection and global awareness.
Beyond the blouse, Algeria submitted several other cultural elements as part of a broader national strategy. Among them are the sacred songs of the medahat, an oral tradition led by women that preserves spiritual expression and religious praise.
Traditional board games such as Al-Kharbqa (Al-Sija), Al-Dama, and Al-Mangala were also included. These games highlight intellectual creativity and social cohesion, reflecting shared practices deeply rooted in daily life. This particular nomination is part of a joint effort involving 13 Arab countries.
Algeria has also contributed to multinational nominations covering traditional pottery craftsmanship and ancestral irrigation systems, further demonstrating regional cooperation in safeguarding heritage.
Officials emphasized that these efforts align with long-term policies aimed at strengthening national identity while promoting cultural assets on the global stage. The initiative reinforces Algeria’s commitment to preserving its intangible heritage amid globalization challenges.
If approved, the submissions will join the prestigious UNESCO lists, offering international recognition and additional protection measures. For many, this represents not just a cultural milestone but a reaffirmation of identity and continuity.
