The Sonatrach Niger drilling project is set to officially begin in April at the Kéfra field, marking a significant milestone in Algeria’s expanding energy cooperation with Niger and its broader international strategy in the hydrocarbons sector.
Hakim Zoubiri, Director of International Cooperation at the Ministry of Hydrocarbons and Mines, confirmed from Niamey that drilling operations are imminent. He stated that preparations are nearly complete, with equipment and necessary supplies expected to arrive in the coming days, paving the way for operations to start without delay.
According to Zoubiri, this initiative represents a concrete and strategic step toward developing Niger’s energy resources. The project is expected to play a key role in enhancing the country’s hydrocarbon production capacity while strengthening technical collaboration between the two nations.
The Sonatrach Niger drilling project also reflects the growing momentum in bilateral relations, particularly in the energy sector. Zoubiri highlighted the strong political commitment from both Algerian and Nigerien leadership to deepen cooperation and expand their strategic partnership.
He further emphasized the positive dynamics of collaboration, noting that Niger has expressed strong confidence in Algeria’s expertise. This was demonstrated through proposals to grant additional exploration blocks to Sonatrach, opening new opportunities for expanded operations in the region.
Beyond drilling activities, the partnership includes significant capacity-building efforts. Both sides have agreed to strengthen training programs for Nigerien professionals across various hydrocarbon disciplines. These initiatives aim to enhance local expertise and ensure long-term sustainability in managing energy resources.
In addition, Algeria will support Niger in establishing a specialized laboratory dedicated to oil sample analysis. This facility is expected to boost Niger’s technical and scientific capabilities, enabling more efficient resource evaluation and development.
These developments were discussed during the second session of the Algerian-Nigerien High-Level Joint Committee on Cooperation, held in Niamey on March 23 and 24. The meeting was co-chaired by Prime Minister Sefi Gharib and his Nigerien counterpart, Ali Lamine Zein Mahaman, with the participation of senior ministers and high-level officials from both countries.
The upcoming launch of drilling operations signals a new phase in Algeria-Niger relations, with energy cooperation at its core.
