Fiat has reached a major milestone in its Algeria expansion, with Fiat Algeria production growth surpassing 80,000 vehicles since the launch of its Tafraoui assembly plant near Oran in late 2023, reflecting rapid industrial scaling and strong market demand.
The Italian brand, part of Stellantis, officially returned to Algeria in March 2023 before inaugurating its local assembly facility in December of the same year. The move marked a strategic shift toward domestic production after years of absence from the Algerian automotive market.
Production initially focused on the Fiat 500, a compact urban vehicle, before expanding to include the Fiat Doblo in both van and passenger versions. More recently, the company introduced the Fiat Grande Panda, designed to meet the needs of Algerian families.
According to Raoui Beji, CEO of Stellantis El Djazaïr, the plant has not only achieved strong production figures but also contributed significantly to employment. Over 5,000 direct and indirect jobs have been created, many of which have helped develop new technical skills within the local workforce.
The pace of production has accelerated sharply in recent months. After surpassing 50,000 vehicles in September 2025, Fiat assembled more than 30,000 additional units in just six months, highlighting the efficiency gains at the Tafraoui facility.
In 2024 alone, 18,000 vehicles were produced, and Stellantis is now targeting an ambitious output of 90,000 units by 2026. This growth aligns with broader efforts to position Algeria as a regional automotive manufacturing hub.
A key component of this strategy is increasing local integration. Fiat Algeria aims to exceed a 30% local integration rate by the end of 2026, supported by plans to introduce stamping operations in partnership with Algerian suppliers. This step will further strengthen the domestic value chain and reduce reliance on imports.
The Fiat Grande Panda represents a milestone in this transition, as it becomes the first completely knocked down (CKD) model assembled in Algeria with full processes including welding, painting, and assembly. Its commercial launch is expected soon, although no official date for orders has been announced.
Meanwhile, production priorities have shifted within the plant. Assembly of the Fiat 500 Hybrid was halted in September to make way for the new Grande Panda line, signaling Fiat’s focus on models better aligned with local demand.
Fiat’s rapid progress since its 2023 return underscores the effectiveness of Algeria’s renewed industrial policy aimed at boosting local manufacturing and reducing import dependency. As production scales further and integration deepens, the company is expected to play a central role in shaping the country’s automotive future.
